Graphene Behind the Headlines: What’s the Big Deal?

NGA Advisory Board member and former International SAMPE President Steve Rodgers will be presenting “Graphene Behind the Headlines: What’s the Big Deal?” at the Utah Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) Chapter, Wednesday, October 2, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM (MDT) in Salt Lake City, UT.

This new “Wonder Material” has been capturing more than its share of headlines recently. The claims made for it are far reaching and it seems that it can do just about anything. But what is the truth behind the claims? How much is hype and how much is reality? What are the critical elements of graphene that make it so interesting? How soon will commercialization become practical?

“Not all ‘graphenes’ are created equal, ” said Rodgers. “As we transition from Newtonian physics to Quantum physics, the way in which the physical properties of nanomaterials express themselves changes. Small, seemingly insignificant differences in materials can make a big change in how that material might be used. We will take a look at some of the variations in “graphenes” and how those variations currently provide benefit to many diverse markets and applications.”

In 2011, Rodgers founded Emergentek, which is engaged in the development and commercialization of advanced materials for such diverse markets as aerospace and agriculture, renewable diesel with a negative carbon footprint and strategic deployment of Graphene as a market-ready, commercially viable material. About the National Graphene Association (NGA)

The National Graphene Association is the main organization and body in the U.S. advocating and promoting the commercialization of graphene. NGA is focused on addressing critical issues such as policy and standards development that will result in effective integration of graphene and graphene-based materials globally. NGA brings together current and future graphene stakeholders — entrepreneurs, companies, researchers, developers and suppliers, investors, venture capitalists, and government agencies — to drive innovation, and to promote and facilitate the commercialization of graphene products and technologies.
